July 2, 2008 Contact: Frank Murray, 542-4835

Enrollment at Columbia Basin College set an all-time record for spring quarter full-time equivalent (FTE) students. Final numbers released this week show 4,822 full-time students attended CBC this spring, the largest number on record.

In addition, summer quarter has already surpassed last year’s record-breaking summer for FTEs. Enrollment numbers show 1,522 FTE enrolled during the current quarter. The number surpasses last year’s record of 1,518. It is expected the final numbers this summer will approach or surpass 1,600 FTE before the quarter ends on August 15.

Summer 2008 marks the eleventh consecutive quarter that enrollment has increased over the same period the year previous.

Enrollment for fall quarter has been underway for more than a month and the numbers are up over five percent from the same time in 2007.

<![CDATA[ 'Dump Sites' a look at nature after death ]]> Published June 27, 2008
By Dori O'Neal, Herald staff writer

The haunting photography of Stephen Chalmers' Dump Sites exhibition, which opens June 30 at Columbia Basin College, pays homage to the victims of serial killers.

"Many of the most notorious serial murderers are either from Washington state or were active here," Chalmers said.

Chalmers says FBI profiler John Douglas describes the Northwest as "America's killing field."

"The weather -- weeks on end of dreary rain punctuated by rare, brilliant days -- probably has something to do with it," Chalmers quotes Douglas as saying. "Or, the fact that this is where the frontier ends and America literally runs out of room."

But as Chalmers points out, what the public remembers about the horror of these senseless deaths is the name of the murderers -- Ted Bundy, Green River killer Gary Ridgway and about 40 others -- instead of the victims.

It was the victim focus of his work that attracted the CBC gallery.

"Stephen Chalmers' photographs present a provocatively different take on the idea of landscape -- different than seen in more traditional art," said Karin Pierce, director of the Esvelt Gallery. "Chalmers is also tackling the controversial issue of society's fascination with evil and what murder looks like while hoping to create a memorial for the victims."

Chalmers spent the last couple of years visiting many of the sites where victims were found and photographed them months, and in most cases, years after they occurred.

He purposefully blurred a section of each photo.

"The general rule for the images is that the areas in sharp focus are the locations, to the best of my knowledge, where the victims were found," Chalmers said.

His images were taken on an unusually large format camera with a 4-by-5-inch sheet of film, he said. His reason for doing this stemmed from the fact that many of the areas in question were beautiful settings that gave no clue as to the horror that happened there.

Though the images might seem creepy because of what they signify, Chalmers explains, "What I find disturbing is that there is nothing disturbing about them at all."

Hence the reason to bring the sites into focus to honor the dead instead of sensationalize the killer. His photos are titled by the name of the victims and their ages. He does not identify who killed them.

There's the solitary tether ball that hangs in a play area surrounded by trees and dirt where the body of 15-year-old Debra Estes was found.

Another is a peaceful country setting with rolling hills and a farmhouse in the distance. Sixteen-year-old Jennifer Joseph's body was found there.

Then there's the dirt path through a wooden glen where the bodies of the Neer brothers, William, 10, and Cole, 11, were found.

"The news industry is obsessed with these sorts of crimes," Chalmers explained. "As the saying goes, 'If it bleeds, it leads.' It seems that every convicted serial killer has at least a couple authors acting as biographers and numerous television and newspaper reports about the life of the perpetrator.

"If you were to ask a person on the street to name three serial killers, they could likely do so without even pausing to think. If you ask them to name a single victim, most people would be hard-pressed to do so. Our society fetishes the criminals and blames the victims."

A selection of his work will be on exhibition through Aug. 7 in the Fred Esvelt Gallery at Columbia Basin College in Pasco.

A presentation with the artist starts at 6 p.m. June 30 in Room L-102 on the CBC campus. A reception will follow at 7 p.m. in the gallery. Admission is free.

<![CDATA[ Thornton led CBC in challenging times ]]> Published June 17, 2008
By the Tri-City Herald Editorial Board

Although Lee Thornton soon leaves Columbia Basin College for retirement, his name will do more than just linger as a memory on the campus.

It'll be there in great big letters every day.

Thornton leaves a school that is bigger and better than he found it 13 years ago when he came to the Tri-Cities to take over the college.

He's led a lot of progress and has seen a squall or two during his time here.

Most notable among the squalls was a past conflict over how to coordinate both Washington State University's Tri-Cities campus and CBC to help transfer students -- a problem long since resolved.

In recognition of his many achievements, the CBC Board of Trustees named the new Science and Technology Center for Thornton.

It's a huge honor, well deserved.

Thornton turned a $5 million renovation of the technical building into a $33 million, three-building project. At 155,000 square feet, the Science and Technology Center is the largest single-story building in the state community college system.

The Lee R. Thornton Center for Science, Diversity and Technology will be a key element in helping develop scientists and engineers in the community.

It was under Thornton's presidency that the new four-year degree program was adopted at CBC.

The agriculture program was updated and put back on track after a previous president's misguided downgrading of it.

Plus, donations for scholarships are on the rise, and now CBC is getting ready to offer upper-division courses in support of an applied bachelor's degree in management.

That means some students could end up with a four-year degree from CBC. It's a whole new world.

Or, in Thornton's own words, it's "one of those sea change programs that will really benefit the community."

The trustees' appointment of Rich Cummins to succeed Thornton on July 1 is reason to expect a continuation of the excellence seen there so far.

In a joint-bylined article in the Herald in March, Thornton and Cummins wrote that Educational Testing Services researcher Irwin Kirsch noted "three global forces that have the potential of a perfect storm to devastate our way of life."

  • Inadequate literacy and numeracy skills among vast segments of our student and adult populations.
  • A massive demographic shift driven by the highest immigration rates in 100 years.
  • The transformation of our nation's job structure, requiring higher levels of skills from an increasing percentage of workers.

"CBC provides many storm shelters, but more help is needed," they wrote. "A regional literacy initiative needs to be conceived and launched to keep our community afloat if we are to survive the impending perfect storm."

Thornton led expansion of the college's main campus in Pasco and construction of a new Health Sciences Center in Richland, as well as an effort to make the college more accessible to low-income and minority students.

That latter effort, which continues, is a vital focus for the future of the entire Tri-City future -- economic and cultural.

CBC has blossomed in the past 13 years.

We thank Thornton for his pioneering work and wish for Cummins a continuation of the excellent start he and Thornton together already have made.

<![CDATA[ Dreams fulfilled at Columbia Basin College graduation ]]> Published June 14, 2008
By Dori O'Neal, Tri-City Herald staff writer

Columbia Basin College student Kim Nguyen took her fellow graduates back in time during her speech Friday at the Pasco college's graduation ceremony at Toyota Center in Kennewick.

To April 30, 1975, to be exact.

The Kennewick resident told the compelling story of a South Vietnamese soldier who jumped from a careening helicopter over the South China Sea.

"Seconds later, the unsteady aircraft (tipped) on its side, its propeller catching the surface of the water, pulling the entire helicopter deep into the ocean barely missing the soldier," Nguyen told the audience.

"That soldier was my father. And, if God hadn't been watching over him that day, I wouldn't be standing here before you to give this speech."

Although her father lost his fight to save his childhood home, he found freedom in the United States, she said.

"My father left Vietnam with the equivalent of an 11th-grade education," Nguyen said. "Within seven years of settling in America, my father earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering at the University of Washington, a master's degree in chemical engineering from Washington State University as well as a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. (And) he started at a community college."

Nguyen was one of 376 CBC graduates who received diplomas Friday.

Toyota Center was packed with almost as many cheering fans as you'd find at a hockey game, with one difference. The cheering was for academic achievement instead of a hockey goal.

CBC's student body president Chris Fulton also addressed his classmates at the ceremony.

He confessed in his speech that he never really thought about going to college until a work-related accident in the construction field put him on a couch with too much time on his hands, he said.

"To be honest, I never thought about my future at all until that day," he said. "As I lay on the couch with potato chip crumbs dribbled on my chest, the idea hit me like a high speed train -- why not go to college."

Fulton said he persevered, just like his fellow graduates did, to get to where he is today academically.

"Tonight you are being congratulated for persevering through counter influences and being rewarded for your accomplishments," he said. "Each graduate will never forget the experiences and opportunities granted through CBC and the difference that makes in all our lives."

Surprisingly, CBC President Lee Thornton, who is retiring after 13 years with the college, did not give his usual commencement speech.

Nguyen summed up her speech by borrowing a bit of wisdom from Walt Disney.

"If you can dream it, you can do it," she said. "All your dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them."

She assured her classmates that Disney philosophy was worth the dream. Then she added, "Congratulations Class of 2008. We totally did it!"

<![CDATA[ '08 Kennewick High grad to get associate's degree from CBC ]]> Published June 13, 2008
By Sara Schilling, Tri-City Herald staff writer

High school graduation went by in a blur for Garrett Woods. Marching into the Toyota Center with his friends, listening to speeches from classmates and hearing his name called as he received his hard-earned diploma all "went by so fast," he said.

So it's a good thing he's getting a second chance at pomp and circumstance.

Garrett Woods
Garrett Woods, 18, graduated from Kennewick High School on Saturday and is receiving his associate's degree from Columbia Basin College tonight. Woods, a participant in the Running Start program, also wrestled and played on the state championship baseball team at Kennewick High. - Herald

Woods, 18, graduated from Kennewick High School last weekend. At a ceremony tonight, he'll receive his associate's degree from Columbia Basin College.

He's one of 71 Running Start students graduating from the Pasco college this spring. He spent his junior and senior years of high school balancing course work from both schools.

He also wrestled and played on Kennewick High's state championship baseball team.

"He's self-driven, very disciplined and focused," said his dad, Jeff. "The whole Running Start experience has been good for him. It's allowed him to see there's a life outside of high school."

Woods would be lab partners with a 55-year-old college student one hour, then work with a high school freshman on an assignment in his next class. One of the best parts of going to two schools was making friends from throughout the Mid-Columbia, he said.

Woods' mom is Felissa Woods, and he has five brothers and sisters.

He's the kind of guy who makes lists and sets goals for himself. Back when he was a freshman, he decided he wanted to get good grades, improve in wrestling and win a state title in baseball.

The list has lots of checked-off items now.

Woods also has a passion for music, and church is a big part of his life. He's a youth leader at Tower of Pentecost in Richland and is working on getting a ministerial license through United Pentecostal Church International. The process includes getting plenty of practice preaching in front of crowds.

It wasn't always easy juggling all that, he said. Sometimes he'd have matches or games in the evening and couldn't start his homework until late at night.

"I've pulled a few all-nighters in the last few years," he said.

He plans to attend Washington State University Tri-Cities and study business administration. Then he wants to go to Indiana Bible College.

He's proud his hard work paid off.

"I can say I graduated from college and high school at the same time," he said. "Not too many people can say that."

His parents are proud too. They had a party for about 70 people last week to celebrate his high school graduation, with orange and black streamers in the living room and a display of yearbooks and photos.

Tonight, well-wishers may come back to the family's house for ice cream to celebrate graduation No. 2.

<![CDATA[ Six CBC women athletes head to four-year schools ]]> Published June 10, 2008
By Mark McKenna, Tri-City Herald staff writer & CBC College Relations

When you first step into Cheryl Holden's office, it's impossible not to notice the gold basketball trophy that dominates the room.

It's the reward for Holden's program's latest feat -- winning the 2007-08 NWAACC women's championships -- which the Columbia Basin College Hawks accomplished in March.

But as proud as Holden was the night her team beat East Region-rival Spokane 49-37 to win the school's second NWAACC title in four years, she's even more fulfilled today. That's because six of her sophomores have signed to play at four-year schools next season.

"It's the perfect way to end such a great season," said Holden, who was named the NWAACC coach of the year for the second time. "Every one of the sophomores played an important role in winning this championship, and they've all contributed so much to the program the past two years."

The super six sophs -- Nikki DePeel, Brittany Cherry, Alexandria Allen, Lindsey Begaii, Rondelle Gurthrie and Karli Thomas -- led CBC to a 28-3 record. The Hawks finished 14-0 in the East Region, won their league contests by an average of 18.5 points and closed out the season on an 18-game winning streak.

"This was a special group of kids," said Holden, who also guided the Hawks to the 2005 title. "They weren't very big, but they were quick and they could all shoot. I think that was the key. We put five players on the court who could put the ball in the basket. And they were all very competitive. They hated to lose."

Undoubtedly some of the characteristics that captured the attention of the four-year recruiters.

DePeel, a 5-6 guard from Hanford who led the Hawks in scoring at 13.2 ppg, will play next season at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho.

Cherry, a 5-8 forward from Pasco who started all 31 games for the Hawks, averaged 12.8 points and a team-best six rebounds. She will attend Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls, where she will play both basketball and softball.

Allen, a 5-7 guard who played her high school ball at White Swan, is headed to The College of Idaho in Caldwell. She averaged 7.6 points and a team-high 4.5 assists.

Begaii, a 5-10 forward from Dilcon, Ariz., will return to her home state and play at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. She averaged 8.1 points and 4.6 rebounds, and she also shot a team-high 50.2 percent from the floor.

Guthrie, a 5-7 guard from Zillah, will join the basketball and track teams at Cascade College in Portland. She averaged five points and 2.5 rebounds.

Guthrie will be joined at Cascade by Thomas, a 5-6 guard from West Valley of Yakima. Thomas, a standout defender, will also run track at Cascade.

"It will be tough to see them go," Holden said of her sophomore group, which also led the Hawks to a seventh-place finish at the 2007 NWAACC tournament. "They'll leave some big shoes to fill."

That's true, but there's still plenty of talent remaining and a strong freshmen class on the way.

One of the key returnees figures to be Monique Wickenhagen, a 5-6 guard from Naches who averaged 7.5 points and 3.4 rebounds. Also expected to play key roles will be 5-10 forward Lauren Rada of Burbank, 6-0 post Samantha White Temple of Lapwai, Idaho, and Beth Alexander, a 5-10 forward from Pasco.

The incoming freshmen include DePeel's sister, Chelsey, and Kristin Mead from Hanford. Jordan Brown from Prosser, Stacey Smith from Kamiakin, Emma Newhouse from Sunnyside Christian and Valencia Tapuro from Lapwai round out the recruiting class.

"I expect to be the same type of team," Holden said. "We'll run and shoot. The girls we have coming back got a lot better going up against our sophomores every day in practice, and our new kids have the potential to contribute right away. We're excited about the future."

Notes
The women's basketball team was not the only CBC program to take home an NWAACC title this year. The women's golf team peaked when it counted most, winning the NWAACC Championships last month in Spokane.

The Hawks, led by first-year coach Dan Clifford, finished seven strokes ahead of second-place Spokane at Hangman and Indian Canyon golf courses.

Sophomores Amanda Bjork and Mandi Villanueva led the way for CBC. Bjork, a Southridge graduate, finished in third place and Villanueva of Umatilla placed sixth. Villanueva, who was named to the All-East Region first team, has singed to play at the University of Idaho next year. Rachel Murphy, a graduate of Eisenhower in Yakima, tied for fourth at NWAACC.

Clifford, the head professional at Horn Rapids Golf Course, was named the East Region's coach of the year for leading the Hawks to a 6-3 record. He was aided by first-year assistant Megan Bruce.

The CBC baseball program continues to be a hotbed for four-year schools. The Hawks are shipping seven players -- to date -- off this year's club to colleges all across the country.

Infielder Luke Fieser (.362, 16 doubles, 41 RBIs) will play at Indiana State, first baseman/pitcher Bret Bochsler (.341, 27 doubles, 4-1, 2.80 ERA) is bound for Abilene Christian in Abilene, Texas, catcher Vaughan Prow (.230, 20 RBIs) is headed for Lewis-Clark State, right-hander Steve Ames (6-4, 1.88 ERA) will pitch at Gonzaga, outfielder Ricky Klontz (.382) will play at Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho, and right-handers Jordan Dallas (1-1, 4.09) and Hunter Herrin (1-0, 3.60) will pitch at Central Washington.

Monday night, June 9th, the Columbia Basin College board of trustees unanimously passed a resolution naming the Washington Institute for Science Education (WISE) project for retiring president, Lee Thornton.

Thornton turned a $5 million-dollar renovation of the CBC Technical building into a $33-million dollar three-building project that includes the new Science and Technology Center, the largest single story building in the state community college system (155,000 square feet), the four-story Health Science Center in Richland and the Moore Observatory.

The Lee R. Thornton Center for Science, Diversity and Technology was in response to the need to increase the number of scientists and engineers in the local community. The Center added capacity for an additional 1,000 students.

The resolution reads in part, “…..the Board, on behalf of the entire college community, acknowledges the 13 years of dedicated service as president that Dr. Lee Thornton has given to Columbia Basin College, and extends a unanimous vote of thanks and appreciation for his devotion of time and talent to education, to this college and to the entire community.”

<![CDATA[ New CBC leader already making improvements ]]> Published June 9, 2008
By Michelle Dupler, Tri-City Herald staff writer

Rich Cummins didn't see a white light when he had a near death experience in 1995 - he saw the future.

Cummins, then an English instructor at Columbia Basin College, said he was hit by a car while riding his bike in Badger Canyon and spent two weeks in the hospital and another several months recovering.

During the downtime, he learned everything he could about the Internet.

"I became fascinated with technology," he said.

He learned to write computer languages and design Web pages, skills he took back to CBC when he returned to work. And they're skills he'll use to continue to transform the campus when he takes over as college president on July 1.

The college's board of trustees on May 12 picked Cummins to succeed outgoing President Lee Thornton, who will retire June 30 after 13 years.

Thornton's tenure has been noteworthy for the expansion of the college's main campus in Pasco and construction of a new Health Sciences Center in Richland, as well as an effort to make the college more accessible to low-income and minority students.

Cummins, 50, is executive vice president and served as acting president while Thornton was on sabbatical during the 2006-07 school year.

It was that experience in part that convinced the board of trustees that Cummins was the right man to succeed Thornton.

"It was a very pleasurable experience working with him (as acting president)," said Salvador Beltran, board chairman. "He is in a field all by himself. There's a certain charisma about him."

Beltran said the board was impressed by Cummins' youthful energy, motivation and dedication to the college.

Cummins has been at the college since 1990, working first as an instructor, then as director of a program designed to infuse technology into the classroom. From there he became dean of Communication Technology, followed by vice president for Information Services in charge of the college's information technology.

"It was a steep learning curve from Shakespeare to Unix," Cummins said.

Cummins said when he returned to CBC after his accident, he asked Thornton if he could build an instructional website for the college and show faculty members how to create Web pages. That began his eventual transition into a full-time administrator.

He developed an online distance learning program and learned how to set up a web server. And he was experimenting with online video lectures before most people had the broadband Internet connections to watch them.

Cummins said he'd like to continue expanding CBC's digital offerings with lectures podcast on iTunes. He believes that would offer the community greater access to higher learning but also help keep the college running in the case of an emergency, like a pandemic disease.

"We could keep the college going virtually," he said.

Cummins became vice president for instruction in 2002. He said Thornton acted as his mentor by giving him greater responsibilities over time.

"The last several years have been very fun, a real growth opportunity," he said.

He plans to continue the expansion projects Thornton started, such as the business building renovation that will start this month.

Another project he'd like to see is construction of a planetarium to work in connection with the Moore Observatory and provide additional astronomy education to children and the community.

"Astronomy is one of the most powerful teaching tools for young minds," Cummins said.

<![CDATA[ Moon rock researcher to give talk at CBC today ]]> PRESS RELEASE
June 9, 2008 Contact: Erica Anderson, 544-4916

Dr. Richard “Dick” Perkins will give a free public lecture, “Nondestructive Analysis of Lunar Materials from the Apollo Missions---Age Dating and Soil mixing,” about the chemistry of lunar rocks today at 5 p.m. in the Science and Technology building, room TD 433, on the Columbia Basin College campus in Pasco.

After the first lunar landing in 1969, Perkins was selected by NASA as one of only 100 people worldwide to serve as a principal investigator of lunar rocks for the Apollo missions, and therefore is one of the few people in the world to ever handle moon rocks on a regular basis for scientific research. To his recollection, he was the only person selected to be a principal investigator prior to application due to his extensive radio-chemical expertise.

Perkins has worked at Battelle Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for 56 years – one of the longest ever recorded tenures in Battelle’s history. Although he is nearly 82 years old, he continues to work as a part-time researcher there in a variety of technical fields.

Photo Gallery: CBC GED graduation

Thousands of graduating seniors from high schools in the Mid-Columbia and students who obtained graduation certificates at Columbia Basin College accepted congratulations, cheers, hugs and smiles Friday night.

Speakers borrowed lines from a movie pirate and shared inspiration from their Avon lady, thanked parents, teachers and even veterans of D-Day to express their gratitude for the opportunity to make something out of their lives.

CBC GED and high school completion
If it weren't for the Avon lady, Kathy Stidham might never have gotten her general equivalency diploma.

That was in 1973, and at 18, she already had been married for three years, she told a crowd of about 150 students in royal blue caps and gowns in Columbia Basin College's Gymnasium on Friday night.

Those students were there to receive their GED certificates, and Stidham said she hoped they'd go on to set the kind of example her Avon lady set for her. CBC awarded GED certificates or high school diplomas to 538 students this year.

Stidham said she had dropped out of school and gotten married at 15, and by the time the Avon lady knocked on her door, she had become a slob.

"I didn't get dressed until after General Hospital was over," she said.

But her local Avon lady got Stidham cleaned up, taught her to drive and took her to CBC to get her GED.

Then she went on to become a nurse, and later a nurse practitioner.

Stidham said she'd like to see those receiving their GED certificates Friday follow in her footsteps.

"This is the first step in the big journey you all are going to take," she said. "No one can take away your education. It's sacred."

Phonesavanh Syanouthai crossed not only an ocean, but also joined a new culture for the man she loves.

She came to the Tri-Cities from Laos three years ago, leaving behind her family and having dropped out of school in her home country. She knew only a few words of English.

"It was just love," Syanouthai said of her decision to move to America.

She met her husband Frank Syanouthai while he was visiting family in Laos. They fell in love, and she followed him home to Pasco.

That decision led to more than marriage and the birth of her now year-old son. Setting foot on American soil also led her toward a new path of higher education and pursuit of a career in health care.

Syanouthai, 23, will receive her general equivalency diploma during a ceremony recognizing 538 students in Columbia Basin College's gym at 7 p.m. today.

She started as an English as a second language student and spent a year learning the new language before moving on to high school equivalency courses. She had to have her husband translate for her when she registered for her first class.

Syanouthai said learning in the United States is different than in Laos, where students sometimes are punished with a rap on the hand for making a mistake.

What: Columbia Basin College GED and high school diploma ceremony

Where: 7 p.m. today

Where: CBC gym, 2600 N. 20th Ave., Pasco

So stepping into an American classroom for the first time was a scary experience for Syanouthai. She worried that the instructor would expect her to know more English than she did, and that she'd get in trouble if she said the wrong thing.

"I was afraid of everything," she said. "Everything was new. I didn't know what the teacher was going to ask. I was afraid to speak."

But instructor Susan Sandmeier said Syanouthai tackled her coursework with gusto, taking on extra ESL classes in math and other subjects.

"Phonesavanh was a star student," Sandmeier said.

While earning her GED, Syanouthai also enrolled in the Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training, or I-BEST, program. It teaches students high school-level skills while they prepare for careers in health care.

By March, Syanouthai had completed the courses to be a certified nursing assistant. Now she's working on a certificate program to become a phlebotomist, a medical technician trained to draw blood.

Her long-term goal is to get her associate's degree in nursing at CBC and become a registered nurse.

But for now she's excited to participate in her first graduation ceremony and get her GED certificate.

"I want to thank CBC for giving me the opportunity make me, make my life change," Syanouthai said. "If you have education, people look at you differently."

June 4, 2008 Contact: Erica Anderson, 544-4916

It will be another seven or eight years before these students will be able to drive, but there is no doubt that the rising cost of fuel and the need for alternative energy is already affecting their families in some way. This Friday, June 6, 140 third-grade students from Maya Angelou Elementary School will learn about the efforts being made at Columbia Basin College to research alternative energy sources. The students will visit CBC’s 18 acre agriculture research farm where they’ll learn about the fuel yielding crops alfalfa, corn, soybean, switchgrass and miscanthus being studied by the CBC agriculture program.

The children will also learn about underground stems called rhizomes; the special bacteria growing on plants that make fertilizer for the plants’ use; and the life cycle of leaf cutter bees and the importance of pollination.

The third-graders will arrive at the research farm on the Pasco campus for their two-hour visit between 10:30 and 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 6.

<![CDATA[ CBC student sets precedents ]]> Published Tuesday, June 3, 2008
By Michelle Dupler, Tri-City Herald staff writer

Like many young people, Bianca Garza didn't know what she wanted to do when she landed at Columbia Basin College.

CBC Student Sets Precents
CBC students Sylvia Olivo, left, and Bianca Garza chat with college employee Shelly Patterson following Monday’s news conference in Pasco where they were both recognized for involvement with the college’s programs that help minority students get into science, math, engineering and technology fields. Garza is the first student in Washington and from a community college to be awarded the U.S. Department of Agriculture Public Service Leaders Scholarship. - TCH

But she discovered agribusiness through working with the college's programs that help minority and low-income students get into science, math, engineering and technology fields.

Now at the end of her freshman year, the 19-year-old from Basin City is the first student in Washington and from a community college to be awarded the U.S. Department of Agriculture Public Service Leaders Scholarship.

The award is given to eight students nationally and usually is reserved for college juniors. It's also usually a two-year scholarship, but the USDA extended the full-tuition scholarship to three years for Garza.

"It's these type of stories that really motivate the staff to do their jobs," said Cruz Gonzalez, CBC's interim vice president for diversity and outreach.

Gonzalez and other CBC officials gathered Monday morning to recognize Garza and three other students they say exemplify what the school's programs for diverse students are about.

Rich Cummins, CBC's executive vice president, said the college chose several years ago to focus programs funded by federal grants on creating better access for underrepresented students to science, math, engineering and technology education. CBC recognized that those fields would be important for diversification of the Tri-Cities' economy once cleanup of the Hanford nuclear site is finished.

The college chose to focus on minority and low-income students partly because federal grants were offered and partly because those students tend to be the first in their families to go to college and need more help finding financial aid, picking classes and planning for their education, Cummins said.

The grants allow CBC to offer scholarships and to set up advising programs to help those students.

Garza and fellow Basin City resident Sylvia Olivo said the help they've gotten from CBC has boosted their confidence and helped them see their own potential.

"I came in feeling negative," Garza said. "I didn't know what to do."

But CBC advisers helped her find her path and now she looks forward to being a leader for other Latino students. One of the reasons she chose to study agribusiness is because there aren't many Latinos in that field, she said.

"A lot of (Latinos) don't think they have the potential to do it," Garza said. "They don't think they fit into that professional atmosphere. But anyone can fit in. They just need to do it."

Olivo, 19, also is studying agribusiness and is the second CBC student in six years to receive the Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities National Internship. She'll work in Denver, Colo., as an intern for the Farm Service Agency this summer.

Joseph Rubio, 25, of Kennewick, and Armando Merlin, 20, of Pasco, are the other two students recognized by college officials Monday. They both plan to transfer to Washington State University Tri-Cities and study mechanical engineering.

Rubio came to CBC after working at a food processing plant in Quincy for several years as an industrial mechanic. He said the coaching he got at CBC helped him stay on track with his classes. He now is the recipient of a $12,500 scholarship from the National Science Foundation.

Merlin received the same scholarship and plans to use his education to work at Hanford as a mechanical engineer.

"They are just amazing kids," Cummins said. "They represent the best our community has to offer. We're very proud of them. I'm looking forward to watching them grow into their careers."

PASCO -- Four students involved in CBC's grant programs earned scholarships and internships.

Freshman Silvia Olivo is the first in the state to receive the Hispanic Association of colleges national internship...Joseph Rubio and Armando Merlin each earned scholarships of more than 12-thousand dollars...And Bianca Garza earned the USDA public service leaders scholarship.

Garza is the first in her family to go to college, and she has message for other Latinas looking to enter college.

"Go for their dreams. Don't settle for less. Go out there and reach for your goals and dream high. You can be something out there big and be one of these few Latina professionals that are out there," said Garza.

The four students will continue on in eighter agri-business or engineering as their careers.

Pasco -- For some people, setting and achieving goals is difficult. It can be especially hard for kids from other countries.

Friday, 70 migrant students from the region were at Columbia Basin College. The kids, who arrived from Royal City, Grandview, Prosser, North Franklin County, and Kennewick were there to learn leadership skills, and how to use their time now to plan a better life.

They also discovered more about problem solving and communication skills. Some had never spoken English until two years ago. Kids also were able to showcase and reflect on their leadership skills through skits and a student panel discussion. The whole intent of the conference is to help attendees gain the needed strategies to pursue higher education.

Nicole Castilleja-Beck, with College Assistance Migrant Program, said the results will be much greater than just sending kids to college.

"We're providing future leaders. We're providing a pipeline to our community to potential leadership in the community. And we're possibly making a change."

Roberto Guerrero, who attends Kennewick High School and did not speak English two years ago, said he attended the conference in order to gain leadership skills which he will practice at school.

The soft-spoken 18 year old said he has been elected President of a club on campus that helps kids who are not fluent in English learn the language. He said candidly that arriving in America unable to speak English was 'horrible.' It was clear Guerrero was not targeting the problem itself, but attempting to explain the difficulties faced by those who are not fluent.

The day-long conference was for kids, while another special two hour training for parents was scheduled for Friday evening at CBC.
